Looking for films to get you excited about Halloween? Look no further.

With Halloween just around the corner, what better time to give you my (very correct) list of frightening flicks to get you into the spooky spirit!

1.      Halloween (1978)

I know, I know, it’s a basic bitch recommendation but it’s a classic for a reason!

Halloween follows Lauire Strode, a sweet, and well-mannered small-town girl who finds herself being stalked by Michael Myers, an escapee from a mental hospital. Things start to take a deadly turn, and a night of babysitting turns into a night of cat and mouse and survival.

With the eerie but captivating score, camp acting, brutal kills and Micheal Myers managing to catch up with his victims despite walking at a snail’s pace, what’s not to love?

2.      ParaNorman (2012)

Stop-motion films are already pretty awesome but a scary stop-motion film?  Count me in.

ParaNorman is about a young boy named Norman, who just to happens to be able to speak to the dead. With his town under a deadly curse, it’s up to Norman and his friends (both dead and alive) to save the day.

ParaNorman is a super fun watch for sure, but it’s also an incredibly touching film about acceptance, forgiveness and kindness. If you haven’t already watched this underrated gem, you need to get on it asap.

3.      Corpse Bride (2005)

Say what you want about Tim Burton, but this gothic-romance is goated. And the songs? Grammy-worthy.

After an anxious young man named Victor messes up his vows during his rehearsal ceremony, he flees to the woods to calm his nerves. But when practicing his vows, he unknowingly vows to wed another woman. A dead woman. And she’s determined not to let go.

Not only is Corpse Bride a very funny and spooky film, but it’s also a hauntingly beautiful tale about loneliness, heartbreak and selflessness. If you like a good scare and a good weep, this film is for you.

4.      Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

This spooky flick is rated 15 but it should be rated P for petrifying!

Set on Halloween in the year 1968, outsider Ramon and his bullied friends explore a haunted house where they discover a book of sinister stories written in blood. Much to the group’s terror, the terrifying tales begin to manifest in real-life in incredibly unsettling and frightening ways.

If you enjoy the thrill of a good scare and the comforting element of trauma, (the scarecrow scene will make you poop your pants) this should be in your watchlist.

5.      IT (2017)

Please don’t crucify me for not using the original mini-series!

A group of young, unpopular teenagers living in the small town of Derry find themselves in the centre of a sinister mystery. After lots of children in their town start to go missing, they come face-to-face with a demonic clown who can transform into their biggest and deepest fears. And you thought your early teen years were traumatic!

The jump scares in this film will leave you shrieking in both fear and with laughter but it’s also a very touching story about friendship, childhood and growing up. So you’ll basically be getting a package deal of fear and nostalgia!

Is your film on the list? Or are there other flicks you watch to get you in a spooky mood?
